The South African "Krügerranden" is an internationally well-known investment coin with a very high turnover due to its popularity. The first coin was minted in 1967.
The Krugerrand is made from 9167 parts pure gold (31.1g) and 833 parts copper. The alloy with copper ensures that the coins are not easily scratched or defaced, thereby protecting their value and tradability.
The front of the coin shows a picture of Paul Krüger, a former President of the Republic of South Africa. "Rand" is the name of the South African currency but also comes from the “Witwatersrand” in the Gauteng province where large amounts of gold were found in the late 19th century.
The back of the coin shows a springbok antelope which is South Africa's national animal. The motif of the springbok was designed in 1947 by Coert Steynberg who was a renowned South African sculptor and medallist.
